Sales Success: Set Yourself Up
The problem with most sales books is that they focus solely on what to say once you are in front of the prospect. That’s not half as important as what goes on before you even set up the meeting. There’s a smart way to set yourself up for sales success. The first steps in organizing [...]

The Customer Experience:
Not What It Used to Be
Leaders seem to forget that their human assets make or break a customer’s experience. “Interpersonal interaction, though sometimes not the top reason for making a purchase, is almost always the reason for not repurchasing.” ~ Marshall Goldsmith, Don Brown and Bill Hawkins, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There in Sales!: How Successful Salespeople [...]

10 More Bad Habits You Could Stop Doing Right Now
How aware are you of the way you come across to others in a conversation? I think most of us aren’t all that aware of how the little things we say can build or crumble trust. And I believe that with a little awareness we can stop ourselves from these habits of communications without a [...]

Bad Leadership Habits: S/He’s Full of Flaws, I’m Not
If I were to ask you what your boss’s bad habits are, what would you say? Why is it that it’s so easy to spot bad habits in others while we continue to think our own are fine? Worse, we don’t even see in ourselves what’s so glaringly apparent in other people. Especially when it [...]

The Diminishing of Leadership Power
Until only recently, we presumed that leaders should dominate and followers must do as they’re told. But after several revolutions, labor movements, human-rights legislation and the spread of democracy, the world has radically changed. Along with it, leadership carries less power. Power, authority and influence are in scarce supply for even the most charismatic CEOs, [...]

Strategic Intelligence: Motivating and Partnering for Success
In my series of posts about radical leadership, I presented an idea from Michael Maccoby, author of Narcissistic Leaders: Who Succeeds and Who Fails, about strategic intelligence, the key to help leaders turn visionary ideas into business success. I think there are valuable insights here that relate to how leaders need to approach their work. [...]

Leadership Success: In Praise of LESS Self-Confidence…
In business psychology, the prevailing wisdom has assumed that a high degree of self-confidence leads to promotions and leadership success. I recently ran across a blog post that disputes this assumption. (Image: FreeDigitalPhotos.net) Business psychologist Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic writes that new studies show that Less-Confident People Are More Successful (Harvard Business Review blog, July 2012). According [...]

Meetings: Can We Really Thin Slice Accurately in Two Seconds?
Forming first impressions accurately can be essential in business meetings, especially in sales. But making poor snap judgments because of unconscious biases can be disastrous. The idea of “thin slicing” — sizing someone or an event up in the first two seconds — became popular with the publication of Malcolm Gladwell’s book Blink: The Power [...]
