Golfing, Marriage and Bad Leadership Behaviors
What do married couples playing golf together have in common with bad leadership teams? You can guess, right?
In many golf clubs, couple’s tournaments are very popular. But they can be painful. Golf can bring out the worst in married couples. I’ve even thought that if marriage counselors were smart, they’d start hanging out at couple’s [...]

Attitude Is Everything in Summer of 2011
The Summer of ‘11: Some days you hardly know where to begin… the economy’s a rough roller coaster ride and the heat’s unbearable. You’ve gotta have a good sense of humor and plenty of optimism if you want to survive. Attitude is everything.
How do you keep cool in spite of it all? I mean mentally [...]

Leading the Boss: 3 Questions to Ask
I’ve been thinking a lot about the problems that arise when someone has the courage to speak up to the boss. In some cases, actions speak louder than words. If you and your boss have established a trusting relationship, you can suggest and take actions that lead your boss to better outcomes.
If you don’t have [...]

Followers and Leaders: When the Boss Goes Nuts…
Have you ever listened to your boss and wondered if he or she’s gone nuts? Or maybe just a little off-track? Ever had the courage to speak up… and had it go well? It’s not easy to manage the boss, but they need your participation.
The more I listen to the stories my clients tell me, [...]
Leadership Styles: It Takes Two to Tango
I’ve been doing some research on leadership styles and came across an interesting video on tango and leadership. It’s made by Ira Chaleff, who wrote a book about the other side of leadership: The Courageous Follower. I think the dance of tango is a good metaphor for the close interaction between leaders and followers, and [...]

Happiness at Work Leads to High Performance
From what I’ve been reading lately (The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor), our brains are literally hardwired to perform best when they’re positive. Yet how many of us hunker down with grit and determination when we’ve got important tasks to accomplish? Maybe we need to laugh and smile more.
For example, doctors who are put in a [...]

Business Success: Be More Positive than Negative
In business, levels of happiness and positivity create success. A positive brain has more intellectual resources. What’s needed is to improve your positive/negative ratio.
I never knew this, but it makes sense: in chemistry and physics there is something called activation energy: in order to catalyze a reaction, there is an initial investment of energy that [...]
The Positivity Zone in High Performing Teams
Positivity has attracted the attention of scientists in the last 15 years because of its link to health, long-life and success. Apparently there’s more to “being positive” than just feeling good. When practiced in business teams, it produces bottom line results. There is a specific positivity zone in which teams excel.
I’m reading about the power [...]
How to Manage Your Ego
A strong ego may help you win in business, but too much can hurt your leadership effectiveness.
I think you’ll agree with me: the hardest side of business to master is the human component. Entire industries are now dedicated to providing leadership training and development to organizations challenged by the behavior of their “human capital.”
Ultimately, however, [...]
