Kouzes & Posner's "Encouraging the Heart" series has been an extraordinary tool to support my leadership development clients. The workbook activities blend well with other processes to fully support emotional and strategic-thinking growth for business owners.

Great questions- it's time to honestly examine our own integrity first and then the integrity of those to whom we give power.

I agree with Darwin's statement (and your concepts) to a degree. Sometimes, adapting can be mistaken for getting by or simply surviving. Those who go beyond survival, even in the "worst" of times are those who are willing to fully explore all their choices. An example: leave a "safe" job or stay even though perhaps not fully happy. The choice would be different for different people but those who view it as a choice as opposed to a "sentence" will feel differently about it. Of course, first one must be able to distinguish between what is within their control and those that are not. I see so many trying to change something they have no control over (others, for example) or waiting for those things to change. This does not lead to personal leadership or personal empowerment and thus little personal change.

New Years resolutions, once you figure out what it is, start telling yourself you are going to do it, give yourself time to prepare, and once the day is here follow through. Tell people you work with, your spouse, friends,... they will help you succeed if you ask.

I love Lehrer's work, although he didn't seem to get reviewed well by the academic community. I had not heard of the work by Chabris and Daniel Simons. Thanks for the suggestion. One back for you...Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely. Great read, talking about how we are very irrational in very predictable ways.

Let's talk perception. We often see ourselves very differently than others do. If you ask my three children to tell you about their mother you would think they were only children. We know what we want to project but we are being received through the receiver's life lenses. While performing Diversity Training I discovered just how tender we are as people. Intent vs interpretation. How do we merge these two? That's where our communication skills have to be maximized. We have to hear the other person's needs and sometimes we have to determine the disconnect is to great. Then what? When we take on learnership roles no one tells us we have to become people fixers.

I put this responsibility not on the individual leader but on the organizational system. The culture must be visible for all to see and then people can determine if their core values are in congruence.

Thanks, Bret! Until Jamie brought it up, I hadn't heard of it either. I believe it stems from the desire to do well by doing good. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.
